Abstract:
This work aims to propose the translation from Spanish into Italian of three short stories from the book "Los peligros de fumar en la cama" by Mariana Enriquez, journalist, professor, and one of the most prominent writers in contemporary Argentinian literature and horror literature worldwide. "Los peligros de fumar en la cama", published in 2009 but never released in Italian, is a collection of twelve horror short stories set in modern-day Argentina, among which I decided to translate “El desentierro de la angelita”, “La Virgen de la tosquera” and “Cuando hablábamos con los muertos”. The following paper is divided into four chapters, which are preceded by an introduction, that will illustrate the structure of the work. The first chapter discusses the author’s biography, focusing on the historical context of the military dictatorship that ruled from 1976 to 1983. Moreover, it delves into the literary group known as La Nueva Narrativa Argentina and provides context regarding the source text object of study. The second chapter focuses on the literary genre of horror, emphasizing, in particular, on how Enriquez envisions it. The third chapter contains my proposed translation into Italian of the selected three short stories. Finally, the fourth chapter consists of the translation commentary, in which I will discuss the main problems faced when translating the short stories chosen, present the strategies used to solve them and motivate my proposal.
