Mapping memory: (an itinerary through Derek Walcott's poetics)

Abstract

Questo studio tenta di definire cosa sia la memoria nella poesia di Derek Walcott. Scopre nell'Hamlet di Shakespeare un punto nodale che collega il senso di memoria biografica e poetica ai cardini della cultura europea. La lettura delle due principali fonti del dramma - Le Georgiche e Fedro -scoprono in Hamlet la 'capitale' in cui si custodisce un codice di trasmissione della memoria poetica. Tale decodificazione fornisce una sorta di mappa grazie alla quale l'opera di Walcott affronta il territorio della poesia inglese. In particolare, la sua poetica sembra aprire un dialogo con quei testi che, similmente, riconoscono in Hamlet lo stesso significato, e con cui intesse rapporti di complicità o antagonismo. I rapporti con la poesia di Dylan Thomas e di William Wordsworth sono del primo genere. Essi sono analizzati in quanto rappresentano, idealmente, le due caratteristiche fondamentali della memoria poetica che si trova nei testi di Walcott. Insieme, costituiscono le due definizioni Platoniche di memoria: come 'riconoscimento' della realtà e potere del linguaggio di 'nominarla'; e come capacità di 'ricordare' l'essenza delle cose oltre la loro presenza fisica.

This study tries to define the meaning of memory in the poetry of Derek Walcott. It finds in Hamlet a main connection between Walcott's biography and work and Western culture. A reading of the play's two main sources - The Georgics and Phaedrus - reveals Hamlet to be the 'place' preserving the code of poetic transmission and traditional knowledge. Through the 'map' supplied by Hamlet Walcott's work finds its ways on the domain of the English literary tradition. In particular, it opens dialogues with those texts that, similarly, recognise the same meaning in Hamlet, with which it has relationship of continuation or antagonism. The relationships with the poetry of Dylan Thomas and William Wordsworth are of the former kind. Such interconnections represent the main characteristics of Walcott's art of memory: the 'recognition' of reality and the power of language to name it; and the recollection of the 'essence' of things beyond their physical presence.
