La percezione della malattia e della guarigione nel mondo bizantino fra il IV e il XV secolo

Abstract

La thèse a pour but de décrire et étudier les mentalités qui se sont développées tout au long du millénaire byzantin autour de la maladie et de la guérison. Dans une première partie c est le sens et l interprétation de la maladie qui sont pris en compte, à travers les différentes étiologies possibles (naturelle, divine, démoniaque) et les intéraction entre elles : le rapport âme-corps est considéré comme l arrière-plan sur lequel la maladie se manifeste ; en outre, c est aussi la maladie mentale qui est également étudiée, avec une attention particulière à son impact social ; enfin, les maladies collectives ont souvent stimulé la refléxion et ont donné lieu à des débats de longue durée. La deuxième partie est représentée par l interprétation de modes de guérison : tout d abord les acteurs principaux (médecin, saint et magicien), avec les spécificités de leur action et leurs modes d intéraction avec le malade ; ensuite, les rapports qui s établissent entre eux et qui ont été organisés dans un parcours thérapeutique, dans lequel naturel et surnaturel, ou différents types de surnaturel se cotoyent sans solution de continuité.

The thesis is aimed at representing and studying the mentalities about illness and healing throughout the Byzantine millennium. In the first part we take into account the sense and the interpretation of illness, considering the different possible etiologies (natural, divine, demonic) and their interactions: in particular we study the connection between soul and body, which is considered to be the background on which illness manifests itself; then we develop the subject of the mental illness, with a particular attention to its social impact; finally, we deal with collective diseases, which often stimulated reflections and gave rise to long-term debates. In the second part, we present the interpretation of the healing: from the main actors (doctors, saints and magicians), with the peculiarities of their actions and their interactions with the sick man, we consider to the relation established between them, organized in a therapeutic course, in which natural and supernatural or different kinds of supernatural are juxtaposed and overlapped without solution of continuity.
