Le isole Ionie dall’arcaismo all’età classica: tradizioni epiche e strutture storiche fra centralità e periferia nel mondo greco : prospettive storiografiche

Abstract

Argomento della tesi sono le Isole Ionie come ‘oggetto storiografico’, a partire dalla nascita stessa dellʼarcipelago come concetto geografico, nel peculiare contesto storico-culturale di inizio '800. Verranno prese in esame le differenti ‘identità storiografiche’ moderne formatesi intorno a queste realtà insulari e il loro influsso sullʼinterpretazione storica. Analizzeremo dunque lʼ ‘identità omericaʼ delle Isole, da cui sono dipese la maggior parte delle ricerche intraprese in questʼarea, e lo spazio rivestito dalle Isole Ionie nelle Storie greche, dove lʼinteresse si concentrò piuttosto sulla stasis di Corcira, al centro del dibattito politico dopo la Rivoluzione francese. Guaderemo infine ai filoni di studio più recenti, dallʼinserimento delle Isole Ionie nel dibattito sulla colonizzazione euboica, al recupero, per queste isole, di unʼidentità propria, come soggetti storici attivi.

This research deals with the Ionian Islands as 'historiographical object', starting from the idea itself of the Ionian Islands as archipelago, which is a modern geographical concept. We examine the different modern historiographical identities assigned to these islands during the last two centuries and how they influenced the historical interpretation. At the beginning of the XIXth century. travellers and scholars considered them first of all as 'the realm of Odysseus' and the first archaeological explorations, but also many later scientific campaigns, had Homer as a starting point. Instead, these islands played little role in the Histories of Greece, except for the case of the Corcyrean sedition described by Thucydides, which the French Revolution brought at the centre of the political debate. In the second half of the XXth century, within a general shift of attention to the peripheries of Greece, the Ionian Islands regained an important role, as connective point in the trading routes towards the Adriatic Sea and Italy. We will give particular attention to the role of the islands in the debate on the Euboian colonisation and to the most recent perspectives, where the Ionian Islands are finally considered as an active historical subject.
