Abstract:
The initial aim of this study is to investigate the function of the Greek school of Trieste from 1801 until 1937. The establishment and initial operation can be seen as a distinctive aspect of the activities of the Greek community of Trieste and can be placed with in the Greek Enlightenment (1750-1830) and general intellectual Renaissance period, which characterized not only Greece but the Greek community as
well.
The presence of Greeks in Trieste from the mid 18th century onwards and their recognized contribution to the socioeconomic and cultural affairs of the city, linked them inextricably with the local history. There fore a detailed presentation of the Greek school is the second purpose of the study related to the history of local education.
The presentation of the operation of an elementary private school in Trieste, the period in question, helps us understand the historical events and sociopolitical
changes in the city and the broader area of today's Friuli-Venezia-Giulia, as
well as understand their impact and extensions through a different angle.
My study is divided into four chapters. The first chapter constitutes a brief
history of the Greek community of Trieste, which is a general outline, useful to be placed in the main theme of the work. In the second chapter the first session of the school (1801-1830) is presented. The third chapter describes the operation of the school from 1830 until 1890 and the fourth chapter the last period of its operation (1890-1937).
