Abstract:
In an educational environment, slowing down to reflect and analyze the learning process is an integral
part of effective learning. Focusing on the positive aspects of the learning process, students are more
likely to develop confidence and motivation for further studying. Confidence building diary (CBD) is a
tool that assists learners to reflect on their studying process with the help of recording one’s reflections
on learning activities and progress. In this study I analyze 35 diaries that were kept by the students of
Ca'Foscari University of Venice, Department of Linguistics and Comparative Cultural Studies. The group
of students was asked to record all the positive aspects of every English lesson throughout the week and
to reflect on what they experienced from completing the tasks. Then a qualitative analysis of the diaries
was conducted to illustrate what emotions and feelings the students experienced during the
performance of a particular task.
