Patrons and tyrants: the glory and the shame of Renaissance Ferrara in English literature

Abstract

La tesi prende in esame l attenzione della letteratura inglese nei riguardi del Rinascimento italiano da un ottica particolare, quella della Ferrara estense, che torna singolarmente a più riprese nelle opere di Byron, Browning, Hewlett e altri, diventando emblematica del difficile rapporto arte/potere. Dopo un inquadramento generale dei legami politico-culturali tra Ferrara e l Inghilterra, ci si è concentrati sulla dimensione letteraria. Sulle orme di Goethe, Byron aveva delineato la figura sentimentale del poeta incarcerato ispirandosi a Tasso, e dando il via al mito romantico che attirerà migliaia di pellegrini alla cella del poeta. Si sono poi delineati i contesti ferraresi nelle opere di Browning, per terminare con il commento ecfrastico di Hewlett agli affreschi di Schifanoia.

The thesis investigates the distorted myth of Renaissance Ferrara that British authors like Byron, Browning, and Hewlett contributed to create. After a general survey of the cultural and political relationships between Ferrara and England, I focused upon the Ferrarese contexts in English literature, examining the Romantic myth of the imprisoned poet, the domineering corrupted tyrant, and the ekphrastic comment to Renaissance frescoes at the Este court.
