dc.description.abstract |
In July 2010, the United Nations General Assembly, adopting the resolution 64/289 created UN Women: the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women.
UN Women works to eliminate the discrimination against women and girls, doing whatever is possible to protect and especially empower them: it is important to intervene with humanitarian actions and peace and security actions, to achieve the equality between women and men because gender equality in addition to being a basic human right, it has a fundamental role in different aspects both social and economic because empowering women help to improve and flourish economies, stimulating productivity and growth.
The Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) which entered into force in 1981, is one of the most important human rights documents, and the States Parties of CEDAW are 189.
The Entity is present all around the world with more than 70 offices (including Italy) to ensure assistance to all the women, working closely also with NGOs and with national and local governments to implement policies and laws in their favour. UN Women especially deals with: leadership and political participation, economic empowerment, ending violence against women, peace and security, humanitarian action, governance and national planning, the Sustainable Development Agenda, HIV and AIDS. |
