Abstract:
La tesi si propone di analizzare il rapporto tra Luigi-Napoleone Bonaparte e Victor Hugo cercando di chiarirne le ambiguità. La ricostruzione storica – forte anche dell'analisi degli scritti dei due protagonisti – si sofferma in particolare sul quadriennio 1848-1852, alternando il punto di vista del futuro imperatore con quello del poeta É stata dedicata particolare attenzione allo snodo cruciale rappresentato dal 1848 ed al fondamentale appoggio dato da Hugo al Bonaparte durante la campagna elettorale che portò quest'ultimo all'Eliseo.
L'idillio era destinato a durare poco: da un lato il poeta slittava progressivamente da destra verso sinistra interessandosi soprattutto alle questioni sociali; dall'altro il Bonaparte si dimostrava abile nel gioco politico ma era costretto a scendere a compromessi che Hugo non comprendeva e non accettava. L'approfondimento si sofferma su aspettative, speranze ed ambizioni di entrambi cercando di far luce sui motivi della rottura.
Segue l'analisi – basata su resoconti dell'epoca – del colpo di Stato del 2 dicembre 1851 che sancì la definitiva presa del potere da parte dell'erede napoleonico e l'esilio di Hugo. Ma il poeta saprà spostare la lotta su un campo di battaglia a lui ben più congeniale: la letteratura. Attraverso l'analisi di tre opere di Hugo: Napoleone il piccolo, I miserabili e Storia di un delitto, verrà mostrato come egli “costruisca il proprio nemico” arrivando contemporaneamente ad ergersi a difensore della Repubblica.
