Abstract:
The thesis regards the diplomatic relations between Japan and North Korea, trying to analyze the historical context that led to this situation, that is, a lack of relations. Since the end of the Second World War, the two countries have been trying to normalize their diplomatic relations with no success. This is mainly due to a gap between the requests and the expectations of both states. Moreover, at the beginning of the 1990s, Japan finally linked the abductions of various Japanese citizens to North Korea. The main focus of the thesis will be the case of the abductions and how this topic became the priority in Japan’s North Korea policy, affecting, shaping and modifying the talks occurred between the two states.
