Le insegne e le ampolle di pellegrinaggio medievali italiane (XII-XVI). Analisi e confronti.

Abstract

I souvenir di pellegrinaggio medievali sono stati attentamente studiati nei paesi europei, soprattutto in Gran Bretagna, Francia e Olanda. In Italia negli ultimi anni in seguito ad alcuni ritrovamenti archeologici sono apparsi diversi studi individuali sull'argomento dando vita ad ulteriori approfondimenti. Fino ad ora però non esistono pubblicazioni che prendano in esame i souvenir nella loro totalità. Con questo lavoro si è voluto creare un catalogo che racchiudesse il maggior numero possibile di insegne e ampolle di pellegrinaggio medievali ritrovate in Italia e ancora conservate in Italia o in musei all'estero. Con l’occasione si è condotto uno studio comparativo sulle caratteristiche dei reperti anche a confronto con quanto ritrovato all’estero basato su dati relativi a forme, dimensioni luoghi e date di ritrovamento. Un approccio differente all’analisi del fenomeno che in Italia ha prevalentemente favorito l’aspetto iconografico.

Pilgrim souvenirs have been carefully studied in many European countries, mostly in Great Britain, France and Holland. Recently in Italy some individual papers on the subject have appeared in relation to some archeological findings. Studies that have contributed to analyze the Italian phenomenon. Up to the present, however, there are no publications that have covered the Italian souvenirs in their totality. With this work a catalogue that collects the largest number of Italian medieval pilgrim badges and ampullae has been created, either including both the ones preserved in Italy and the those that are now in museums abroad. At the same time a comparative study has been made of the characteristics of the findings confronting them with those found abroad under the aspect of shapes, sizes, sites and dates of discovery. A point of view different from the approach followed until now in Italy which has usually favored the iconographic content.
