In Italy, the majority of films and TV series are imported from English-speaking countries and require dubbing for local audiences. This study investigates the complexities of audiovisual translation with a focus on the unique challenges involved in dubbing. It outlines its history, the creation process, and the role of broadcasters and censorship in Italy. The research then delves into specific translational challenges, including synchronization, and the strategies used to translate verbally expressed humour and cultural references. The first season of the TV series BoJack Horseman serves as a perfect case study, as its satire of American culture and frequent use of wordplay to convey humour present significant obstacles in translation. The analysis of the series is carried out by comparing the original English version with its Italian dubbed counterpart, focusing on the processes carried out in the transfer from English to Italian. Furthermore, the research highlights the significant challenges in audiovisual translation, particularly how cultural differences and humour can impact the effectiveness of dubbing, while also addressing technical constraints and variations in language. The findings emphasize the intricate nature of translating media and highlight how different approaches are required to create a successful product. Overall, the research demonstrates that, despite these challenges, the translators’ final goal is to preserve the original's intent and impact. |
