Abstract:
This master's thesis embarks on a journey of ruangrupa, an Indonesian artist collective, origins in Jakarta to its influential role in global contemporary art discourse, documenta fifteen. The research explores the active and dynamic relationship between ruangrupa initiatives and the activities involved in the contemporary surroundings and the evolution from grassroots initiatives to international recognition, focusing on their collaborative methodologies, thematic explorations, and impact on the global art scene. From unconventional mediums to collaborative processes, the research delves into the artistic ways in which artists and communities collaborate to shape the narrative and societal norms. By highlighting ruangrupa's artistic journey, this thesis contributes to a deeper understanding of collective art practices in the contemporary era, emphasizing the innovative approaches by the collective sphere to challenge norms, create inspire dialogue, and enact meaningful social change.
