dc.description.note The thesis attempts to show the ongoing relevance of the 19th century Russian masterpiece “Dead Souls”, as well as cinema's abilities to reveal completely distinct interpretive possibilities of the literary work across time. In doing so, the close connection that exists between Russian literature and cinematography emerges. The four chapters, in chronological order, cover four adaptations of Gogol's famous poem "Dead Souls" over a timeline of almost a century. The first chapter examines the first adaptation in 1909, at the turn of the 20th century. The second chapter looks at the Dead Souls adaptation, which was released during the Thaw in 1960. The third part focuses on the 1984 Dead Souls adaptation, produced amidst the difficult period of the Stagnation, and the fourth chapter pauses on the most recent Dead Souls adaptation, released in 2020. it_IT
