Abstract:
This thesis aims to propose an audiovisual translation from English to Italian. The subtitling work was performed on the first episode of BBC’s miniseries And Then There Were None (2015) directed by Craig Viveiros.
The thesis is composed of three chapters. The first chapter provides an overview of the field of audiovisual translation and a brief history of audiovisual translation in Italy before moving on to discussing the numerous different features of subtitling. The characters and primary themes of the source material are examined in the second chapter. An intertextual comparison between the miniseries and the novel that served as its inspiration is also presented. The third and final chapter presents a commentary on the translation work. It begins with the translation procedures followed throughout, analyzes the issues encountered in the translation process, explains how those issues were resolved, and lists the translation strategies that were applied. Ultimately, the dissertation concludes with a reflection on the subtitling work completed for this study.
