The uncontrolled economic acceleration has led to unsustainable and unethical industrial practices which have greatly affected the level of degradation of the environment. A radical shift from the current economic paradigm is necessary to create an industry which complies with the highest environmental, social, and labor standards and drives competitive sustainability in all markets. The new growth strategy relies on Circular Economy practices which focus on developing closed-loop, energy and material flows replacing the “end-of-life” concept with restoration. Moreover, the integration of the concept of Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) enables a more responsible and conscious attitude of all stakeholders involved which consequently generate a smoother and more efficient CE transition. However, industries are approaching this transition differently according to the environmental impact and social engagement of their activities. Through a systematic literature review, this thesis aims to determine a conceptual framework which integrates RRI into the CE transition process to derive a common pattern of instruments and concepts necessary to develop a Responsible Circular Economy. What is more, the thesis will focus on the textile and fashion industry as an example of the application of all concepts mentioned so far. Inputs, stages, and outputs of circularity in the fashion industry will be described and compared as well as practical solutions for implementing circular business models and corporate practices benefiting citizens, communities, and societies. |
