dc.description.abstract |
Economic growth is considered a key driver of human development worldwide. China, the world's second-largest economy by nominal GDP, has experienced impressive economic growth in recent decades. However, despite this growth, the country ranks very low on gender equality indices. According to the World Economic Forum's Gender Gap Report 2022, China ranks 102th out of 146 countries. This is a significant drop from its ranking of 63rd in 2006. This thesis aims to explore the drivers of China's gender gap and its impact on the economy. The study will examine the international debate on gender inequality and compare it with the Chinese one, focusing particularly on the role of women's unpaid care work. The thesis will also contain reflections on feminist movements in Chinese civil society and their effect on the public policies related to women’s rights. |

Economic growth is widely acknowledged as a significant factor in driving human development globally. China, the second-largest economy in the world based on nominal GDP, has witnessed remarkable economic expansion in recent decades. However, despite this growth, the country ranks low on Global Gender Gap Report In the World Economic Forum's Gender Gap Report 2022, China ranks 102nd out of 146 countries, marking a significant decline from its 2006 ranking of 63rd. This thesis aims to explore the factors behind China's widening gender gap. This study utilizes an international feminist economics framework to investigate the drivers of China's gender gap, with a specific focus on the role of women's unpaid care work within the unique socio-context of the country. The research methodology involves also an examination of domestic literature, analysis of care policies implemented in China, and exploration of Women's Studies within the country. By thoroughly examining these factors, the study aims to achieve a comprehensive understanding of the factors contributing to China's gender gap. |
