The purpose of this thesis is to show how the Italian shipbuilding industry is in a pole position in the survival and thriving race to a more unified European market.
We are going to do so through the introduction of cluster economies concepts. Which are the parameters that identify a cluster and its dimensions. Which attributes bring success to a cluster or its demise.
Once the theoretical background is formed the analysis of the different shipbuilding industries worldwide and in Europe can start. Their dimension, and positioning in the global value chains, in what they specialize and the different national policies that support them.
Thus we will be able to highlight the relatively strong points of the Italian production chain and how it compares to its main competitors. If the value chain is consistent and produces value or if it is lacking elements. Who the main actors in this production are and if they collaborate between them.
At the same time thanks to the duality of the nature of the analysis, we will be able to identify the weak links in the chain: the reluctant actors, the missing resources, or the cultural aspects influencing the end result.
Concluding with what challenges the industry faces, how the rationalization process is already affecting the Italian clusters, which opportunities the sector has, and the principal risks it will have to face in the future to ensure its survival and thriving in a new European dimension. |
