Abstract:
This master's thesis titled "The Greater Bay Area Dream: Exploring the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area’s Journey to Global Prominence. Zhuhai’s Role in Catalyzing Regional Growth" delves into the complex and dynamic landscape of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) and, in particular, Zhuhai's pivotal role in catalyzing regional growth. As urbanization reshapes global landscapes, the GBA stands out as the largest and most populous among the world's bay areas, marked by its triple strategy of integration, innovation, and internationalization. This thesis comprehensively analyzes the developmental trajectory of the GBA, encompassing the economic, political, and strategic dimensions that underpin its growth. It scrutinizes the internal and external challenges that confront the GBA in an uncertain global milieu. Notably, it explores the intricate interconnection between the Dual-Circulation model and the GBA, highlighting the critical role the GBA plays in China's economic strategy. Central to this analysis is Zhuhai, one of the GBA's 9+2 cities, whose role is examined in-depth. The study focuses on Zhuhai's connectivity with other cities and its potential as a driver for regional advancement, ultimately contributing to the GBA's global competitiveness. The first chapter provides an extensive overview of the GBA, including its framework agreement, infrastructure, and governing policies. It also compares the GBA with other global bay areas, such as the San Francisco Bay Area and Tokyo Bay Area, highlighting areas for enhancement. The second chapter presents a detailed portrayal of the GBA's current condition, addressing various sectors within the global context. It categorizes challenges as external and internal, with a special focus on the applicability of the Dual-Circulation model to the GBA and the region's role in its execution. The third chapter analyzes Zhuhai's role within the GBA, emphasizing its efforts in enhancing infrastructure connectivity and promoting collaborative interactions among cities. It delves into challenges faced by Zhuhai, particularly in the realm of innovation, a cornerstone of the GBA's future progress. The thesis concludes by presenting insights drawn from the analysis of Zhuhai's current circumstances, identifying its strengths and challenges, and offering policy recommendations to guide future development strategies within the GBA. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of the GBA's multifaceted dynamics and Zhuhai's potential as a catalyst for regional growth and global prominence.
