Memory of an Island: anthropological and environmental memories of the Island of Lussino

Abstract

The environmental memory of an island refers to the collective knowledge and experiences of a community's long-term relationship with its environment. This includes their understanding of the local flora and fauna, the natural resources available, and the impact of human activities on the environment. Each community has left its mark on the island, contributing to its unique cultural and environmental heritage. The Island of Lussino (Cres-Losinj, Croatia), has a rich and diverse ethnographic history marked by centuries of cultural influences and economic development, which has been both shaped and threatened by modernization. By exploring the island's history, ethnographic characteristics, cultural and folk traditions, and efforts towards preserving the landscape and ecology, this thesis aims to highlight the significance of preserving the island's cultural heritage in the face of modern challenges.
