This thesis aims to analyze the relationship between food and translation and provides a subtitling solution to the pilot episode of the British television baking competition ‘The Great British Bake Off’, which was launched in August 2010.
This work is divided into three main parts.
The first part is a review of the literature that focuses on food and translation. It begins with a brief introduction to culture from a translation perspective, and it explores the importance of food as a cultural item. Then it will focus on the relationship between food studies and translation studies and food in the translation process.
In the second part, we have a general overview of audiovisual translation with a focus on subtitling. I will also explain ECR, and the subtitling strategies used to render them, focusing on the ones developed by Pedersen (2007, 2011).
The last part will begin with an introduction to the TV show chosen for the subtitling work. I will then proceed with the description of the methodology that was applied to the subtitling approach and the analysis. In light of the methodology applied, in conclusion I will review the solutions adopted during the subtitling phase.
By using the theoretical notions and incorporating evidence from studies after the discussion of the subtitling solution, I will conclude by highlighting the importance of acquiring a certain awareness of the impact of cultural elements, specifically food, in the translation process and highlighting the need for additional research regarding this topic. |
