Abstract

This thesis focuses on the translation from Chinese to Italian of three articles written by Chinese journalists and a Master’s degree student. The articles revolve around the permanent residence permit legislation in China and the changes concerning the relevant laws, especially in the last few years. The thesis is divided into three chapters. The first chapter consists of an introduction to the topic: a short historical section to provide an understanding of how immigration policies have developed and changed in China, the different types of Chinese visas, how to get a permanent residence permit in Shanghai, and the effects of the pandemic on visas for foreigners in China. The second chapter is a translation from Chinese into Italian of the selected articles. The first article reports the experience of a Nobel prize winner that worked in Shanghai for more than 20 years and managed to get the residence permit, leading foreigners to wonder if only Noble prize winners can get the aforementioned permit. The second article provides information about the Request for Comments on the new regulations of the permanent residence permit issued in 2020; the third article is an analysis on the nature of permanent residence control, that draws the conclusion that it is an administrative licensing. The third and final chapter provides a translational commentary, analyzing the main problems and difficulties faced during the translation process and the techniques and solutions adopted in order to produce the final Italian text.
