Abstract

This thesis focuses on the translation of literature for children, with particular regard to the translation of picturebooks, complete with a general overview of the subject and the analysis of the illustrated book “L’albero di ombrelli - 雨伞树 yusan shu” as a case study. This dissertation is divided into three sections. The first section introduces the main topic, in order to provide the reader with a general overview. To begin with, the section shall briefly consider the historical background of the literature for children both in Italy and in China, looking at its development up to the present day. The second section focuses on the different theories of translating for children, with a special interest in those addressing the translation of picturebooks. The theories taken into account are the results of a series of studies conducted by distinguished scholars such as Finnish translator and theoretician Riitta Oittinen. The third section investigates the features of the picturebook “L’albero di ombrelli雨伞树 yusan shu”. The most striking characteristics of this book are its bilingual nature and its educational role. The analysis focuses on the narratological and semiotic aspects of the case study, which means that both the rhythm of the story and the relationship between text and images shall be the object of in-depth discussion. Furthermore, this dissertation shall address the educational role of the book and examine the choices of the translator. A bibliography can be found in the appendix at the end of this paper.
