Abstract:
Digitalization is a fast growing phenomenon that causes relevant changes in the way of producing goods or services and working. Indeed, it can be seen from two perspectives: Industry 4.0 and the spread of digital labour platforms associated with the gig economy. The thesis aims at underlying the critical issues behind this phenomenon in terms of opportunities, risks and challenges in labour law debates. It provides existing and potential solutions regarding the status of employment and the protection of platform workers, who are often regarded as independent contractors and thus excluded from the rights belonging to traditional employees. The last part presents the case of the healthcare industry by analyzing the powerful opportunities unlocked by the digital revolution.
