dc.description.note This thesis aims to analyze the role of language in the making of the Latin American “debt crisis” of the 1980s. The first chapter provides the etymology of the word “crisis” and the evolution of its use, particularly in economic theory, as well as the dialectic relationship between the concepts of “debt” and “credit”. The second chapter presents the unfolding of the “debt crisis” in Latin America in the 1980s, according its mainstream historiography: it considers the underlying causes, the process of debt accumulation, the outbreak of the “crisis”, and subsequent negotiation process. The third – and last – chapter investigates the words used to describe the “crise da dívida externa” and the emerging discourse on the “crisis” through a selection of articles from that time period, collected from the Folha de São Paulo, one of the most widespread Brazilian newspapers. The research finds that the alignment between the storytelling of the Folha and the history told by the western capitalist powers reflects the Folha’s, and broader Latin American society’s, internalization of the creditor’s discourse around the “crisis”. Furthermore, this line of inquiry confirms that the vocabulary of the “crisis” is a powerful tool to explore balances of power, not only within the unique relationship between Latin America and the Western World, but also to investigate other relationships, events, and “crises” past and present. it_IT
