dc.description.abstract |
The feminist topic has become more and more important lately all over the world and it has developed in Taiwan as well. This work is about feminist movements in Taiwan and it suggests a translation for the first Taiwanese feminist novel, 這三個女人 by Lu Hsiu-lien.
It starts with a chapter about historical women’s movements in the 20th century on the Taiwanese island, analysing their main successes and their most famous representatives’ achievements.
It then moves on to explore Taiwanese women’s literature in the 20th century, shortly explaining the most important novels of said period.
After a biography of the politician and feminist pioneer Lu Hsiu-lien, it is presented a suggestion for the section of her novel 這三個女人, which is important for its exploration of women’s condition not only in the Taiwanese society and context, but also that of the United States. The main character is, in fact, an expatriate woman who has to deal with everyday life as a wife in a new country. In the United States she is confronted with a different lifestyle and she starts to think whether her inculcated idea of getting married and having children is all there is in life. She then meets a long-time friend of hers who helps building up these doubts with her direct questions and the example of her life as a single successful woman.
Ultimately it is offered a commentary to the translation, where the techniques used are detailed and explored. |
