Abstract:
This thesis is concerned with the fundamental issue of motivation in language learning and teaching. Some of the major theories on motivation will be outlined briefly, as a theoretical framework for the research that has been carried out. The research is about students’ motivation in learning English as a foreign language (EFL) and it aims mainly at discovering if EFL learners are motivated, what type of motivation theirs is and what role the teacher plays in creating and sustaining motivation in learners. The participants of this study were both students and teachers who were asked to fill in a questionnaire on motivation in EFL learning. The results obtained from the students’ questionnaires will be compared with the teachers’ perceptions on learners’ motivation and similarities and/or discrepancies between the two will be analysed and discussed in order to shed some light on the classroom praxis that enhances students’ motivation the most.
